A standard zoom (also called a normal zoom) is a term used for zoom lenses that (at the wider end) are wider-than-normal while at the narrower end being narrower-than-normal. Typical example focal ranges of such standard zoom lenses are e.g. 35–70; 28–75; 28–85; 24–70 (FFE) etc. Some definitions of a standard zoom encompass any zoom lens that covers the 50 mm focal length (e.g. a 50–135 mm lens)
Today, a budget standard zoom is typically offered as a kit lens in most body&lens kits and while certainly being nothing fancy, many such kit lenses offer fantastic bang / buck.
The pro-level standard zoom is by many considered the workhorse of professional photographers (from press photographers to event photography).
